LUNA @ Amoy Street

Located near Telok Ayer MRT, LUNA is a local patisserie offering artisanal cakes and baked confectionaries. A friend who worked in Raffles Place area recommended me to visit them as he knows I have a soft spot for desserts. And so, I headed down over a weekend with a couple of friends to check them out.

We started off with the most popular item on their menu, the Orh Nee Cake - vanilla sponge layered with yam ginkgo paste and yam cubes, topped with coconut Chantilly cream, white chocolate pearls and desiccated coconut. The cake is well balanced without being over jelak and sweet.

Tarte au Tropicale - pineapple tart filled with pineapple crémeux, diced pineapple and coconut mousse on top. The pineapple flavours are not overpowering and light, however I felt the tart base was not well made perhaps due to it being mid-afternoon when it has been sitting for a couple hours.

Strawberry Elderflower - strawberry mousse cake with a floral centre composed of joconde sponge mixed with milk chocolate-coated sunflower seeds, honey crémeux and elderflower jelly. The cake tasted refreshing and mellow, definitely a good choice for those wanting something lighter.

Matcha Opera - matcha chiffon sponge filled with matcha mousse and matcha ganache, topped with matcha powder and Chantilly cream. Although there are several positive reviews for this cake, I felt it was rather dry and dense. The different layers did not balance well me, with some sweet and some bitter, felt like two different types of desserts.

Lychee Mint - Victoria sponge made with white chocolate mousse on top of a mint cereal base, with lychee mint jelly resting atop. It is a decent cake, the base probably would be more crunchy and not as soggy if fresh out from the kitchen.

Gula Melakaya - gula melaka sponge cake, featuring fragrant layers of pandan kaya and coconut mousse, finished with Chantilly cream and coconut shavings. Unfortunately, the sponge was dry, gula melaka a tad overly sweet, weakest cake we tried.

LUNA 2.0 - valrhona guanaja 70% chocolate mousse with hazelnut sponge and dark chocolate glaze, with core of crushed hazelnuts, salted caramel, hazelnut dacquoise and dark chocolate-coated feuilletine. If you are a dark chocolate lover, you most definitely would enjoy this little morsel. Absolutely loved the bitter chocolate with the familiar ferrero rocher texture and nutty flavours.

LUNA is a cosy place to chill out with friends (note: do come early on weekends to avoid the long queues) and compared to some other local patisserie, they offer a rather extensive selection of pastries. But perhaps that is also an achilles heel, as there are some hits and misses for me.
