UNA @ The Alkaff Mansion

UNA, housed at level 2 of The Alkaff Mansion (an early 20th century bungalow), serves up Basque and Spanish fine-dining cuisine to guests. The Alkaff Mansion is surrounded by lush greenery, while heading up the flight of stairs, I cannot help but feel that I am being transported back in time to a colonial party.

The interior décor with its dark wood theme is warm and intimate, perfect for a romantic date. The view our of the 2nd floor windows is very picturesque.

Shortly after being seated, I was served the Amuse Bouche which is a serving of warm sourdough bread, while waiting for the dinner to be prepared.

The first course started off with Pan Con Tomate Y Jamon - crystal bread, tomato, 5j iberico ham. The saltiness of the ham was not overpowering and stimulates the palate for the dishes to come.

The Terrina De Pulpo - octopus terrine, crushed potato cake, avocado, mojo picon, mojo verde is a delight both visually and to eat. Mixing the picon and verde sauces elevated the taste of each mouthful.

Ostra A La Parrilla - grilled oyster, chorizo breadcrumb is well executed, the oysters sweet and springy.

Next up before the mains is Guiso De Pescador - fisherman’s stew, mussel, clam, langoustines. While the ingredients are fresh, I personally felt the broth to lack depth.

One of the options for main course is Wagyu A La Parrila - wagyu ribeye, baby yukon gold potato, paprika cauliflower, dried golden chanterelle sauce. The meat was succulent and retained most of its flavour and tenderness. One of my favourite dishes for the meal.

The other choice for mains is Bacalao A La Plancha - pan-fried sale cured atlantic cod, arroz rice with manchego cheese, baby carrot, piquillo sauce. The rice with cheese and piquillo pepper melded in harmony and added to the fish’s palatable qualities.

To end of the meal is Crema Catalana - spanish creme brulee, berries, mint. Unfortunately, this dish left me underwhelmed, the top of the brulee was thin, the ramekin rather shallow which made each scoop of the custard feel rationed.

Overall, it was a decent meal, great ambience and the service is fantastic. If you have never been to the Alkaff Mansion, have a Citi Prestige card and snag the Haute Dining deal, it is definitely worth the experience.
